What it does not change

No seller has paid for a place in any list here, and no seller has been given a preview of what is written about their product. The ranking inside each of the 5 gear categories is decided by a single rule, stated on the page itself: the item that states the most about doing the job that category exists to do goes first. That rule puts several well-known products near the bottom of their sections, and it stays.

Where a listing makes a claim about a benefit, this site reports that the listing makes it and takes no position on the outcome. Where a listing omits a specification, this site records the omission rather than filling it in, and that omission is often the most useful thing on the card.

How the links are marked

Every affiliate link on this site carries a nofollow and sponsored relationship attribute and opens in a new tab. Citations to regulations, agencies and certification programs are ordinary links and earn nothing. The two are never mixed in the same list.
